How to grow your business online

Are you finding it hard to reach potential clients? Do you find that other newer businesses are poaching your work? Are you unsure how to stem the tide and improve your social media presence? Well don’t worry – we can help. People are increasingly relying on the first or second result from Google to find companies to work with. If you aren’t landing at the top of search results, you’re in trouble. Whether you are offering a place to stay on holiday or building and gardening services, having a solid online presence is no longer optional. It’s vital. The days of relying on handing out business cards to find new work are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. So if you are shouting “Help! My business is failing!” then here are some POSH ideas on how to turn it around.

Customers need to see your website

Chances are if you are reading this, you’ve never really concerned yourself with online marketing. You’ve never had to – word of mouth and newspaper ads were probably all you needed. But these days, with the credit crunch and cost of living crisis, people are more savvy with their money. They only want to spend it on people that can trust, and one way to build trust is to have a comprehensive website.

A good website means having a series of pages which show you know what you are talking about. You are experts in your field, so let’s make sure potential customers know this. That’s because doing so will make them more likely to hire you. There are plenty of ways you can set up your own website for free, but as with everything in life, you get what you pay for. A free website will not give you a personalised URL (that’s the www bit) nor will anyone tell you if it is working to pull in customers.

A POSH website will ensure your website is professional and functional. All pages will be geared towards climbing high in Google searches whilst also being beautiful to look at and interesting to read. We’ll take the time to talk with you and understand what you’d like to promote and tell people. Our team will then write, add images and publish your website. Once you have an online presence, the hard work can begin.

Develop a professional social media presence

A good social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and increasingly TikTok is vital for every thriving business today. That’s because:

A good online presence builds trust in potential customers. They can see previous work, get to know your business and understand a bit more about who they are giving their money to.

You can use social media to drive people to your website, increasing the chances they might buy from you.

Social media is a great way to increase your reach and recognition. In addition to interesting and relevant content, you can run competitions to engage your audience.

Companies who understand the language of social media can turn that into paying customers. If you would like help in doing so, just drop us a line to start a chat.

Online advertising done correctly

You may have seen adverts on Facebook or Instagram. You may have scrolled past them without paying any attention. This is a sign that those adverts weren’t targeted and were a waste of money. If you advertise through us, we’ll make your money work hard for you.

POSH Agency specialises in paid advertising on search engines and social media platforms like Facebook Ads. This is a great way to get your message out about the services you offer. Want to promote a sale? Interested in telling people about your new website? Want to push your products at a specific seasonal time of year? This is where we come in to make sure all of this is taken care of.

Advertising on social media is where a lot of younger companies spend their marketing budget. This is because 4.8 billion people around the world use social media. Chances are your next customer is one of them. Let us get you some leads to really turn your business around.

Build your digital marketing strategy with us

We know that people who run companies want to do just that – get on with their job. We agree, and think people work best when they focus on their specialities. That’s why we will work to bring together your own, personalised digital strategy to spot ways your business can grow online. We can see where people are engaging with you online, and how to capitalise on that. After we’ve analysed your online footprint, we’ll advise you on next steps and be with you all the way.

So if you are struggling with your business and looking for ways to get more customers online, then drop us a line today. We’ll happily have a no obligations chat with you, and see how we can help. You don’t have to be scared about entering the online marketing world, especially if you’ve got a POSH friend with you. Change “My business is failing. Help!” to “My business is growing. Thank you! ”.

Have you lost access to your business Facebook page? This can happen for many reasons. Often, it is because whoever was running it has left the company without handing back admin control. It may even be that the admin has passed away, and now you are left locked out of your own business page. There is also the possibility that a hacker has gained admin control and locked you out. However it has happened, here is how to reclaim admin rights to a Facebook page. It can be quite a lengthy process, but hopefully worth it in the end. Please note, we only work on these issues for our direct clients. But you can try to solve your issues yourself with this helpful guide…

Reclaiming ownership of your Facebook Business page

First, make sure that you haven’t been hacked, and this is why you have lost access to your page. If you think this may have happened, then you can report hacking attempts here.

If you have exhausted all other options, including contacting the person with current admin access if possible, then it’s time to get Facebook involved. You can contact them through their business help page. Alternatively, if you can still log into your personal Facebook page, try their support page here.

There are going to be a few things you need to get ready. This is so you can prove you should have access to your page.

What you need to reclaim ownership

1) A copy of a valid government-issued photo ID. This could be a driver’s license or passport of the individual signing the statement. You can find the different types of identification Facebook accepts in the help centre.

2) A signed statement from a person with sufficient knowledge and authority on this matter. The statement should include all of the following:

a) A description of your relationship to the Page (including your authority to request a change from the person(s) managing the Page, as applicable);

b) The Page’s URL

c) The name of the current person(s) managing the page, as applicable, and the relationship of this person(s) to the Page;

d) An explanation of your request. For example, has there has been a termination of the working and/or business relationship with the named person(s), as applicable;

e) All documentation supporting your request. This could be a business license or certificate of incorporation under the business page name to prove the applicant’s authority over the business.

f) The Facebook account or email address associated with the Facebook account that you wish to have added as the new page administrator;

g) A statement that the information you have provided is true and accurate. For example, “I declare under penalty of perjury that the information provided is true and accurate”. Your statement should include similar words.

What happens next?

Even after jumping through all these hoops, it does not guarantee that your request will be accepted. All the documents you supply will be reviewed by the relevant Facebook team. They will decide whether or not it will be accepted.

Securing your account

So that is how to reclaim admin rights to a Facebook page. Once it is back up and running, it’s worthwhile taking the time to make sure it is secure. This includes ensuring you understand all the different types of roles available on Facebook pages and initiating two-factor authentication. And once you are set up again, read our tips on creating viral content for your social media channels.

Coronavirus is causing lockdowns all across the UK. However, unlike lockdown 1, this time what you can and can’t do varies from region to region. This makes hotel marketing during lockdown very difficult. Planning both short- and long-term strategy is difficult, but more important now than ever. This is the time to re-assess your accommodation or hotel marketing strategy. But what should you be thinking about?

Here are six ways to easily keep your business attractive and encourage visitors to book.

1. Forget about your usual cancellation policy

This is a time where we must revise our policies in order to compete.

A cancellation policy was a great way to ensure that your guests actually turned up and you didn’t lose any revenue from no-shows. But that was when their decision to not show up was actually their decision to make.

Now, with lockdown rules changing on a weekly basis with little warning, it is mostly out of the hands of the customer as to whether they can stay with you or not. Hotel best practices are changing. So we must amend our cancellation policies. We need to respond to the current times, so people can cancel with little notice, i.e. on the day of arrival if their travel is affected last minute by Covid-19. Thus, by doing this, you are taking away a potential barrier stopping potential bookers from choosing your brand.

In reaction to Coronavirus, Parliament House Hotel in Edinburgh, for example, is now offering free cancellation right up until 2 pm on the day of arrival. This gives people the peace of mind that they can cancel at the last minute without penalty.

Keep in mind most people won’t want to cancel, so why not encourage that booking rather than worry about a cancellation?

2. Manage your rates

If paying attention to the competition was important before, it’s even more important now. And this doesn’t mean keeping on a par with the competition. It means taking action to gather bookings in a very unstable environment. This may be the one time that we would recommend dropping your AOV. If your AOV is more than 5% ahead on last year, and your sales are back, now is the time to adjust.

Depending on what tier you are in will make a large difference on who you are marketing to, and the prices you can charge. For example, it may be that only locals in your tier can stay with you at any given time. In this case, your rates should be low to reflect this. You need to encourage people to leave the comfort of their homes.

And whilst we may need to devalue rate just now, perhaps we can boost sales via clever packaging? People still want an experience. They will still spend or something special. And they desperately want a change of scenery. Reflet this in your offerings like The Dunstane Houses. They offer solutions for locals needing to work at home but perhaps are finding it difficult or monotonous. For example, wigwams in your room if traveling with kids.

The Kingsmills Hotel and Ness Walk Hotel have also packaged well with socially distanced family reunion breaks. Package to consumer desires and satisfy their travel concerns with great communication of your covid policies, and you will still encourage bookings to come in.

3. Update your Coronavirus policy regularly

As mentioned above, we must keep our Coronavirus policies updated, at least monthly. Eagle Brae in the Scottish Highlands, for example, stay up to date with policies north and south of the border. Make sure it has a date so people know that you are actively keeping an eye on things. Caring about your guests’ health and safety is always a top priority, but is something that should be more visible now than ever.

And, once your policy is updated, share it! Shout about it on social, via homepage banners and site links. Regularly update customers on social as to how you are keeping them safe. Create TikTok videos around your safety measures to gain extra reach.

Make sure you are aware of any changes that are due to take place to your tier level. How does this have an impact on your guests? Ensure your hotel customer service is up to scratch and can answer any questions potential guests may have, on the phone, on email or in person.

Have you updated how you do things at your accommodation? Implemented any new innovations or technology to enhance guest safety? Make sure you add it to your Coronavirus policy. Even better, if you run a blog, and put it on that too. This will help with your hotel marketing SEO.

4. Keep your advertising spend

Make sure you keep advertising. No matter what, the worst thing you can do is hibernate and stop reaching people on their social media and Google searches.

This is because you need to stay at the forefront of people’s minds. Even if they can’t book today, you want to be the first hotel they think of when they can. So keep sponsoring Facebook posts and buying Google ads.

We are tailoring on almost a daily basis at present to target different regions (not in strict lockdown) with tailored ads around future bookings and possible leads. And remember, if the demand isn’t there, you don’t pay… So you aren’t going to lose out!

We have noticed that competitors and OTAs have reduced ad spend. This has allowed us to gain far greater reach, with lower click spends, and far far less competition. So whist they snooze, they lose. Its a win win for you!

5. Package your deals

Make yourself more attractive to customers by making booking easier for them. This means putting together a package specifically for a time they are most likely to want to holiday. Half term, Easter, spring break – all of these are when people are most likely to holiday as a family. So make sure you are ready for that and have packages at the ready. For example, book three days and get a fourth free. Or offer a bottle of bubbly upon arrival, like Elderburn Luxury Lodges have done.

For the moment, most people are booking hotel stays for almost immediate arrival. So look again at your rates and make sure they are comparable to your competitors. Create seasonal, immediate offers, like Kingsmill Hotel. Here you can book a convenient package straight away and be there the next day – minimal stress.

6. SHOUT!

After all this hard work, make sure you shout about it! Get on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Slap up your offers as a banner on your homepage. Make sure it’s the first thing people see. Do you have anyone who is video savvy? Then get them to do something for social media. Videos are shared up to 12 times more online than text and image posts combined. This video from Ness Walk about making home made cocktails during lockdown was very well received.

Do you have a customer email list? Then get sending them offers and news. Make sure you use all your channels to promote your business.

Keeping your business attractive during Coronavirus lockdown

Use all these strategies to increase hotel revenue. We’re sure that there is a very bright future ahead for the hospitality industry.

On January 11th 2018, Mark Zuckerberg announced a new Facebook update, to shake business activity. This will change the way businesses and personal users interact on the network. It will primarily affect the news feed, where users see posts from their friends and pages that they follow. Facebook wants to increase social interactions between friends and reduce the number of ads and business posts that users see.

Why is this New Facebook Update Happening?

Fewer people are actively using Facebook. Younger people favour the likes of Instagram and Snapchat. And, Facebook users have complained about an increase in ads and ‘fake news’ dominating their news feeds. Keeping it personal for users, whilst making revenue from advertising is a big challenge. Facebook is always tinkering with its algorithms, striving to get that perfect balance. But, this is one of the more significant updates, with a big announcement made by the CEO.

As the update is rolled out over the next few months, users are likely to see fewer business posts in their news feed. Facebook will give less visibility to website links and videos, and priority to posts that spark conversations and engagement between friends.

So, what can you do to make your Business stand out?

If your business relies heavily on social media marketing, don’t panic! There are a few things you can do to ensure you stay visible on Facebook.

Encourage your likers and followers to select ‘see first’ on your page, under the ‘following’ tab. This will ensure that they see more of your posts near the top of their news feeds.

Think carefully about what you are posting. It’s better to publish fewer, more engaging posts, that will get people commenting and interacting with each other.

Share different types of content. Instead of posting photos, videos and links to your website, try asking engaging questions, creating events and broadcasting live video. All of these things are more interactive and will be given greater visibility.

Create a group on a relevant topic and link it to your page. You can also join existing groups to share content. Groups encourage interactions and discussion between members and will be prioritised with the new Facebook update.

Consider increasing the amount of paid advertising you do. As organic reach is reduced for business pages, sponsored posts and ads will become an even more important way to stay visible.

Keep your eye on the ball

Social media and digital marketing is a game that is constantly changing. And, good marketers know that embracing change is the only way to grow your business. As the new Facebook update is rolled out, we will get a better understanding of what works and what doesn’t. So, keep using Facebook and your other social channels. Post lots of different types of content and analyse what gets the most engagement for you.

Social Media Campaign Management – Yes or No…?

These days, social media isn’t just for tagging your friends after a good night out. It’s the perfect marketplace for your business, where smart advertising can be free and real-time likes are often translated into online transactions. Uniquely, social media campaigns are also the one arena where businesses can stand on an equal footing, and where huge advertising budgets aren’t always translated into huge followings.

If you aren’t convinced that an ordinary kitchen-table business can compete with a high-street-brand-turned-internet-store, let me prove otherwise. You see, when it comes to social media campaigns for business, it’s not what you’re marketing that matters, it’s how you market it that counts.

When Social Media Campaigns Fall Flat

It’s easy to be skeptical when you haven’t seen success. A few years back I worked freelance for a luxury hotel OTA based in the UK. It was big business and the advertising budget was impressive. As part of our social media outreach plan we decided to jump on the Facebook bandwagon and give away a £1000 voucher to be redeemed against a stay in a luxury hotel. Since we had hotels in every corner of the world, we decided to go global. Our competition was posed online with gusto (as well as a strapping headline) and we sat back to wait for the ‘likes’ to roll in.

Our starting point was an existing database of 1,672 followers. Not great, but surely enough to get us going? On day one, the ‘likes’ trickled in slowly. Our following grew to the lofty heights of 1721 – hardly enough to warrant breaking out the champers. Day two came and went in similar fashion, while days three through six barely nudged above another fifty in total. When the competition eventually closed on day seven, our Facebook readership had hit 1,936. We had earned a grand total of 264 followers. Did that justify a voucher valued £1000? Possibly not.

A few years later I went to work freelance for a British self-catering company that was trying to break into the Scottish market. By this time I’d learnt a thing or two about social media marketing (I’d even graduated to tweeting). Their Facebook followers were pitifully low in numbers, and their Twitter account was in extended hibernation by the time I took it over. To generate interest I chose to host a competition and create a little buzz. One week later, and with a newfound understanding of exactly how social media for business works, I’d managed to flog three organic chocolate bars for the grand total of almost 600 new followers, proving that prizes don’t need to be big if you market the right way.

You see, what I’d learned was that social media campaigns for business don’t market themselves. There’s no good adding a competition to Facebook and expecting it to grow alone. It needs to be marketed, nurtured. Without the right attention you may as well not bother because you certainly won’t get the right return.

What Happens When Social Media Campaigns for Business Work

While not every campaign takes off like a packet of Mentos in a bucket of Coke, these days I have a fair idea of how well they will work before they get posted, and so far they’ve all been a measurable success. It’s not about being a Facebook genius, either. In fact, aside from work, I barely tag, like or share a thing on my personal profile. It’s about having the right avenues for promotion, knowing when to post, and remembering to engage afterwards.

So what happens when social media campaigns for business work? And I mean really work? Let me tell you about one of our latest social media campaigns on behalf of The Dunstane, a pretty boutique hotel in Edinburgh’s Haymarket and one of our existing clients.

We ran a two week competition to give away an overnight stay for two people, dinner included. We also threw in a box of artisan chocolates from a local company to make it really sweet (pardon the pun). One carefully timed launch date later, a touch of PPC during the inevitable ‘mid-point lull’ and plenty of behind the scenes advertising and we finished on a high; Facebook follower growth of 148%, Twitter followers up by 150%, social media revenue increase of a magnificent 249% and, my personal favourite, referrals from Facebook to the website of an utterly ridiculous 27,125%!

Still think that social media campaign management for business is a waste of time? Don’t take our word for it. You can view more results from our work with The Dunstane or get in touch by saying hello@poshagency.com.
