As we write this in the middle of 2025, the rise of ChatGPT and other AI tools seems only to be accelerating. As with any new technology, there are concerns about what this means for the future of websites and their content. There’s plenty to say, but for now let’s focus on one particular and important aspect of digital marketing – search engine optimisation (SEO). We’ve spoken at length about the importance of SEO on websites, and it’s something we focus on with all our clients. Making your website readable and easily understood is key to attracting, keeping and converting visitors. It’s how you get found on Google, which is a key metric for all businesses with an online presence. But what are the pros and cons of using ChatGPT for SEO?

Pros of ChatGPT

AI has become more sophisticated in its writing. It is able to knock up a 500 or 1,000 word blog in a matter of seconds. And, it’s free. You can sit at your desk and within five minutes have a fully written blog using any keywords you would like and upload it with a couple of images and boom, job done. And yes, AI can even generate the images for you, saving you even more time and money.

Multiply that over the course of a day and you could be churning out thousands of words, very easily, without the need to do any research, editing or understanding of the topic yourself. For only a few pounds, you could probably find someone on Fiverr to do it for you whilst you enjoy a round of golf or some time in front of the TV. This will result in a consistent publishing schedule that will ensure your website is constantly refreshed with new content – a key aspect of being Google-friendly.

ChatGPT can also create a variety of content types on a whim. From a funny blog post to a serious article, or from a LinkedIn post to Memorandum of Understanding, AI is versatile. Of course, it’s not just the finished product it produces. It can deliver outline strategies, article structures and even talk ideas out with you. Sometimes it feels like there’s nothing it can’t do!

Cons of ChatGPT

So we’ve established that AI can generate significant amounts of various content in very little time. However, it means if you’re doing that, then so are millions of people all over the world. Everyone is using the same regurgitated content on their sites and ultimately not producing anything new. How can you stand out? And what will make Google put you at the top of its organic search results over a competitor doing exactly the same?

Furthermore, it might even be making stuff up! “Hallucination” is a real problem where AI gets a bit confused and starts to make things up. If that’s then posted online, then other AI could pick it up, eventually spreading a load of nonsense. This will not reflect well on you or your business, and you will quickly lose the trust of your customers and Google.

Without human oversight, ChatGPT productions can result in poorly written, poorly researched and sub-standard work. Online users are quickly becoming able to pick up on what was ‘written by a robot’, and may feel that ultimately if you can’t be bothered putting the time into your web content, why should they put in the time reading it? The same applies to Google – it much prefers text written by a human (and yes, it’s very good at detecting when it isn’t).

For best results, use Human Intelligence!

Using ChatGPT for SEO has its place in digital marketing. However, it can’t do it on its own and needs a human to make it useful. Whether that’s re-writing or proofreading, a person needs to see and be able to make any changes in advance of publication. Best of all, however, is a researched article or blog with accurate information and, if possible, some unique local insight to a place or activity that adds depth and simply doesn’t exist elsewhere online. Only people can do this – and POSH does it the best! That’s some of us up there, ready to get to work for you.
